Villa Maria

It was erected at the beginning of the eighteenth century. A little later it became the property of Urbano Rattazzi, Prime Minister appointed by H.M. King Victor Emmanuel II. In 1863 Rattazzi married the delightful Lady Maria Wyse, Princess Letitia Bonaparte's daughter and the Alsatian Count De Solms' widow. In honour of this lady the villa took the name which it still has.

The Rattazzis spent their summer holidays here for about ten years, then, because of a loss at game, they had to sell the villa. It was acquired by Marquis Giuliano Capranica's grandmother; the marquis often stayed here with his wife, Lady Adelaide Ristori.

Among the numerous compliments which this great tragic actress used to receive for her interpretations, she merited also this: "Elle est unique, comme Dieu"!. It was uttered by Dumas senio, a true connoisseur. Later on, the Gardiol family entered in possession of Villa Maria; then it was transferred to the Borletti family. For some years it has been the property of a well-known silk manufacturer from Como.
